Common diseases in Cats and Dogs

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a term used to describe conditions that can affect the urinary bladder/urethra of cats. The symptoms of these conditions include bloody/ cloudy urine, loss of bladder control, constant licking of urine opening, and urinating outside of litter box. The conditions may present itself as a variety of problems such as, inflammation of the bladder (cystitis) or urethra, formation of urinary crystals/stones in the bladder (crystalluria/urolithiasis), and/or partial or total obstruction of the urethra. Urinary tract obstruction is also referred to as plugged-penis syndrome in male cats and dogs. Complete urethral obstruction can be fatal if left untreated. According to statistics, FLUTD affects 30% of all domestic cats, the first infections starting between ages 2 ~ 6 years of age. About 10% ~ 20% of these pets develop recurring problems with FLUTD if the correct preventative measures are not taken.

We are trying to solve the abovementioned issues with the following:

1. Develop a fiber-based diagnostic device (i.e., paper -/cotton-based diagnostic device; we will alternatively use either paper or cotton as the substrate materials, depending on the biomarker that we would like to work with) that can be used with very small urine sample volumes for easy use.

2. Develop a smartphone application that can analyze urine test colorimetric results in order to offer more accuracy overcome human-eye shortcomings.

3. Develop a diagnostic kit to diagnose urolithiasis, cystitis, and urinary tract infection and establish standard diagnostic concentrations for pets.

We have spent almost a year developing a urinary diagnostic device for pets, and we strongly believe that Petgeia will benefit not only pets but also pet owners and veterinarians in the near future.
